Glaslough & Castle Leslie: A Guide to County Monaghan's Most Magical Village

Discover Glaslough, County Monaghan — home to Castle Leslie Estate, one of Ireland's most atmospheric castle hotels, and one of Ireland's best-preserved estate villages.

The village of Glaslough sits 11km north of Monaghan Town in a quietly beautiful corner of the county. It's a small place — a handful of houses, a church, and the gates of a great estate — but those gates open onto one of the most extraordinary private estates in Ireland. Castle Leslie Estate is the reason most people come to Glaslough, and it does not disappoint.

Glaslough Village

Glaslough is one of the finest examples of a 19th-century planned estate village in Ireland. The village was built in the mid-1800s as an orderly and attractive home for workers and tenants associated with the Castle Leslie estate, and its character has been remarkably well preserved.

The houses along the main street are built to a consistent scale and style, with neat gardens and a uniformity that speaks to deliberate planning. The overall effect is one of calm and order — a village that looks like it was set down complete and has barely changed since.

The village church and estate gates are the visual focal points. The gates to Castle Leslie Estate are the starting point for most visitors, and just passing through them shifts the mood — suddenly you're in a different world, enclosed within the estate's woodland and parkland.

Glaslough takes its name from the Irish Glais Loch — the green lake — referring to the small lake at the heart of the estate.

Castle Leslie Estate

Castle Leslie is one of Ireland's most celebrated estate hotels and one of the most atmospheric places to stay in the entire country. The estate covers approximately 1,000 acres of woodland, farmland, lakes, and parkland, and has been in the Leslie family since the 17th century.

The main castle is a Victorian Gothic pile built in the 1870s to designs inspired by Scottish Baronial architecture. Its turrets, battlements, and mullioned windows create exactly the kind of romantic silhouette that people have in mind when they imagine an Irish castle. The interior is no disappointment either — high ceilings, open fires, ancestral portraits, and the comfortable eccentricity of a house that has been lived in for generations.

The estate also has a hunting lodge — a more relaxed and informal property on the estate that offers a different style of accommodation from the grandeur of the castle itself.

The Leslie Family

Part of what makes Castle Leslie so distinctive is its family history. The Leslies are a remarkable dynasty — writers, painters, diplomats, soldiers, and iconoclasts — and their stories are woven into every room of the castle. Sir Shane Leslie, the writer and poet, was a cousin of Winston Churchill. His son Desmond continued the family's literary tradition. The current Leslie generation continues to live on and manage the estate.

This is not a castle that was bought, refurbished, and branded as a hotel. It is a family home that has been opened to guests, and that distinction is felt throughout the experience.

Staying at Castle Leslie

Rooms in the castle and hunting lodge are available for overnight guests year-round. Castle stays are a premium experience and priced accordingly — expect to pay significantly more than a standard hotel, but the experience is genuinely different and memorable in a way that few hotels can match.

The estate is particularly popular for weddings, romantic breaks, and milestone occasions. Paul McCartney and Heather Mills married at Castle Leslie in 2002, bringing the estate international attention — though its reputation among Irish visitors pre-dates that occasion considerably.

Things to Do at Castle Leslie Estate

Equestrian Centre

The Castle Leslie Equestrian Centre is one of the best in Ireland. It offers lessons for all abilities — from complete beginners to advanced riders — as well as hacking and trail rides through the estate's woodland and farmland. The estate's terrain is ideal for riding, and the combination of an excellent facility with a beautiful setting makes this a standout equestrian experience.

Estate Walks

The estate's woodland and lakeside walks are accessible to day visitors as well as overnight guests. Walking through the mature woodland around the castle and along the shores of the estate's lake is genuinely lovely — the kind of walk that feels removed from ordinary life in a way that's increasingly rare.

The Spa

Castle Leslie Estate has a spa offering a range of treatments. It's popular with couples on romantic breaks and is a natural complement to an overnight stay at the estate.

Dining at Castle Leslie

The estate's restaurant serves food that matches the setting — well-sourced, carefully prepared, and presented in rooms that could hardly be more atmospheric. Whether you're dining in the formal castle dining room or in the more relaxed lodge restaurant, the quality is consistently high and the experience of eating in a Victorian castle dining room is one to savour.
